Festivals of Dubai

Dubai's culture is firmly rooted in the Islamic traditions of Arabia. Islam is more than just a religion, it is a way of life that governs even the smallest of everyday events, from what to wear to what to eat and drink. Arabic culture in poetry, dancing, songs and traditional art is encouraged and weddings and celebrations are colorful occasions of feasting and music. Thus the culture and heritage of Dubai is tied to its religion.

Ramadan is the holy month in which Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Holy Koran. Its timing is not fixed in terms of the Gregorian calendar, but advances 11 days every year. It is a month of fasting when Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn to dusk. Visitors are also required to refrain from consuming these items in public during daylight hours as a sign of respect.

Eid Al Fitr is a feast marking the end of Ramadan and is celebrated over three days. Celebrations start after prayers in the morning, and gifts are exchanged.

Eid Al Adha is a festival of sacrifice and marks the end of Haj (the pilgrimage that all Muslims should make to Makkah at least once in their lives). It lasts four days.
