Located to the north of the Lhaviyani Atoll, the administration of Kaafu Atoll comprises of 4 geographical atolls - the North Male Atoll, South Male Atoll, Gaafaru Atoll and Kaashidoo Atoll. There are about 80 islands in the North Kaafu atoll, out of which only 12 islands are inhabited with a population of about 10,000.

The North Male Atoll is the main centre of tourism and has the largest number of resorts. In fact, tourism in Maldives started in this island only with the first resort being opened in 1972. At present, there are more than 44 resorts in this atoll, with the majority of them being located at the North Male' Atoll.

Amazing coral formations and the marine life, which get attracted to these formations, combined with the wrecks make North Male' a popular diving destination in Maldives. The modes of transport for accessing the resorts in the North Kaafu Atoll vary from the Dhoni, motorized local vessels and speedboats.
